CARLOS E. OCHANTE HUANCCOLLUCHO

Hi guys, my name is Carlos, and this is my life. I was born on April 22, 1977, and my biggest motivation is my beautiful mother, who always supports me at all times. I am fluent in English, Spanish, Italian and Quechua; in my free time, I like to go out with my friends and tell them our experiences on the Salkantay route.

I chose the incredible career of tourism because I love to know new places and learn about our history. It is really rewarding to know that our great ancestors achieved with their great wisdom and respect for everything that surrounds us (Pachamama). A word as simple as "guiding" means a lot to me. It is sharing my culture and traditions with visitors from all over the world. It makes you feel that your family is here and will always welcome you with open arms. Guiding for me is to teach our visiting brothers and sisters respect for everything around us.

One emergency I remember was when I went on the Salkantay Trek 5D, and the river flow had increased; the passengers were worried, but I had to calm them down to cross the road without fear. With the help of one of the younger passengers, we made it across the river. It was a real team effort, and at all times, I was able to gain their trust. Positive energy and optimism in these circumstances are indispensable in not despair.

In the eight years that I have been guiding, the route that has impacted me the most was Choquequirao. You must explore! I have been with Salkantay Trekking for three years now, and more than a company, it is a great organization where each of us is a fundamental part of its development.
